(Updated March 23, 2024)

**The canyon flooded 4 days ago (well outside our morning tour time), but the water has since disappeared and we were able to get about halfway and all the way down the canyon this morning. As of right now, tours inside the canyon are back on! Please email to inquire about availability as the booking system will likely show unavailable due to the uncertainty of the canyon conditions right now. Only morning tours are available right now. Get in there before the water returns!**

We are asking everyone to meet us at the trailhead again this year. Meeting at the canyon means more time IN the canyon, not driving around picking people up! Directions can be found here: Fifth Bridge If you find yourself without a ride, please do contact us. We’ll do our best to help out!

Ice walk season is December 1 – April 1.  Generally, we can walk in to the Queen icefall by January 1st, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. We always walk the canyon bottom as far as is safely accessible, and offer canyon rim walks as an early season tour prior to full freeze-up (shuttled hike). Every season is unique and conditions vary from year to year; canyon season may be longer or shorter, but is always beautiful!

There is a morning and afternoon ice walk time to choose (8/8:30am & 12/12:30pm). Tour is 3 hrs. In our opinion the morning tour is the best. It’s worth it, we promise!

If you don't see the dates you want, please inquire for availability.

**we do not recommend booking an ice walk on a travel day. allow more time for travel, road closures, train delays, etc in winter. we will do our best to accommodate, but we cannot offer refunds for road closures of the icefields parkway or poor driving conditions; please plan accordingly.

frequently asked questions:

  • How hard is the Maligne Canyon Icewalk? Can my 6 year old child come? Can my older parents do the hike?

    • While you do need to be prepared for the weather and walking outside for 2-3 hours, our guides are highly trained to enable folks both young and old, fit and otherwise to be able to get into Maligne Canyon and witness her beauty. Depending on your needs, it may be best to go on a private tour, but everyone should expect some big steps up & down, cold water and ice (we provide warm, waterproof boots and ice cleats for that) and uneven terrain. If unsure, please don’t hesitate to Contact Us for more information about current conditions.

    • For children under 7, please email us before booking. We do allow younger children to come, but often recommend going privately rather than in a group setting.

  • When is the best time to visit Maligne Canyon?

    • December & January are known for unique ice formations such as frazzle ice and feather dusters but is often more challenging to walk. February and March is generally easier to walk in the canyon and the ice is thicker. The canyon is ever changing, though so every visit is unique and different!

    • The morning is the best time to experience solitude and tranquility in a canyon that can get very busy in the afternoons, especially on Saturday. Looking for that perfect Instagram photo? Come in the morning.

  • Is the Maligne Canyon Icewalk worth it?

    • Maligne Canyon is the jewel of Jasper - a must-see attraction that everyone visiting Jasper National Park should experience. We provide the gear and local knowledge to explore the canyon in a way no one else does; it is worth visiting at any time of the year.

  • Can you do the Maligne Canyon Icewalk on your own?

    • Yes…and No. You can visit Maligne Canyon on your own, but you will be restricted to just the main trail. Parks Canada installed locked gates in 2021, making it more difficult to gain access to the bottom of the canyon (We do not recommend hopping the fence as there are many hidden and unmarked hazards within). If you would like to visit the depths of Maligne Canyon safely, you should go with a guide.
